The Stage after the group stages is the last 16. In this the teams that qualified from the group stages play against each other. The teams play twice so that both can play at home. If the tie ends in a draw the team that has scored the most away goals will go through. Following that does not provide a winner then extra time is played and then if that is inconclusive it will be kicks from the penalty spot.

The format for the group stages of the champions league are 32 teams split into 8 groups with 4 teams in each group. The top 2 with most points in each group progress to the next round and third place go in to the Europa League.

The Uefa Champions League has been running since 1955 from when it was known as the European Cup. The modern day name of Uefa Champions League has been in usage since 1992. Since then a vast range of club teams from Europe have competed. Real Madrid have currently won the most titles with nine from 1955 onwards. The first club in Britain to secure the European Cup was Celtic in 1967. The current holders of the cup are Chelsea.

This years Champions League has been interesting so far with some sensational goals being scored throughout the group stages and the last 16. The tournaments top scorer this year is Christiano Ronaldo with 8 goals with Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz also on 8.
